Haydons Place are back with their sophomore album, “Gears”, but this time they have shed the pop/rock sheen of their first record and evolved their sound into something more unyieldingly aggressive.
Personal struggles outside of the band inspired this evolution in sound. Gone are the youthful, optimistic piano hooks and in their place are the angry scratchings of electric guitar. Despite this, it isn’t all uncharted territory; the tight, 3 part harmonies are ever-present and they do fine work of telling stories of pain, loss and frustration. Catchy guitar riffs, slick bass lines and surprising sound design all gently remind you that this is still very much a Haydons Place record, albeit louder, grittier and a lot more risk-infused.
“Gears” explores the notion that this machine we call life is nothing but a series of components that are connected in ways that we don’t always understand, and how sometimes it’s better to let the machine just…do its thing.
