When fourteen voice students from the CBY Academy of Performing Arts came together to form a choir for a one-time show in late 2024, no one could have anticipated the chemistry that would develop within the group.
However, during their first group rehearsal, the choir’s musical director, Christian Bell-Young, recognized a special energy that set them apart. It quickly became evident that something extraordinary was unfolding. Before long, the choir was in the recording studio, laying down vocals for a charity single to follow their debut public performance at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre in November 2024. The excitement continued as they were whisked off to a promotional photoshoot in Dundas, Ontario, the following week.
Initially billed simply as The CBY Choir, it was clear from the outset that each member brought as much individuality and personality to the group as they did vocal talent. This uniqueness called for a new name, one that would distinguish them from their academy roots and establish them as a musical entity in their own right.
Drawing inspiration from the Latin words for heart (“cor”) and voice (“vox”), as well as the Italian word for choir (“coro”), the group became Corovox. Their debut single, an emotional cover of Andy Grammer’s 2019 hit “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was released on Boxing Day 2024, with all proceeds going to The Lighthouse for Grieving Children and Families, a local charity.
With their first whirlwind month behind them, Corovox now looks to the future with excitement. They aim to release more music, deepen their connection as a group, and, most importantly, continue to “sing from the heart.”
